Receiving tubes made of steel, glass and plastic on a blue drape.

What is a receiving tube?

A receiving tube— also called a receiving tube — is a hollow support used on the side where the needle exits in some techniques. Depending on the model and technique, it may receive the tip and provide a supporting surface. It does not guide the needle or make a procedure safe or sterile on its own.

The name does not identify a standard size or intended use. Before assigning it a function, check the specific product and the training required.

Shapes and features

Dimensions, length, opening, profile and material vary between models. There is no universal diameter: assess compatibility with the needle and the manufacturer’s stated use, as well as visibility, access and control. Do not choose on the basis of the name or appearance alone.

Before use, check that the surfaces are intact and free of chips, burrs, cracks or deformation. If the needle meets resistance or the tube cannot be positioned and controlled according to your training, stop: do not force it or improvise an alternative.

Hygiene, reprocessing and compatibility

Check the label and instructions for use (IFU) to establish whether the product is single-use or reusable: the material alone is not enough to determine this. A single-use item must not be reused or resterilised; separately check whether the packaging states that it is sterile and whether it is intact.

For a reusable device, follow the IFU for cleaning, any disassembly, accessories for internal surfaces, inspection, packaging and sterilisation. Thorough cleaning precedes sterilisation; internal channels need procedures suited to their geometry. If there is no verifiable IFU, or the lumen cannot be cleaned and checked as specified, do not return the device to service.

Training and limitations

Selection and positioning require practical training. This article does not explain how to perform a piercing and does not replace supervision, manufacturer instructions or applicable requirements. Before using a model, identify its manufacturer, product code, intended use and single-use/reusable status.

  • Do not infer compatibility or sterilisability from the material alone.
  • Do not use a damaged device or one without verifiable instructions.
  • Do not confuse a receiving tube with forceps: they may have different functions.

FAQs and sources

Does a receiving tube always replace forceps?

No. Its role depends on the model and technique; the instruments are not automatically interchangeable.

Is there a universal diameter?

No. Check compatibility against the product and your training.

Is a reusable tube cleaned in the same way as a solid instrument?

Do not assume so: follow the IFU procedure for the lumen and check that it applies to the model.

Sources and limitations

Sources consulted on 14 October 2026. The CDC and WHO describe general principles for cleaning and reprocessing devices; they do not validate a receiving-tube model or a body-piercing technique. No product with a verifiable, specific IFU was identified: function, dimensions, compatibility and reuse must be confirmed for the chosen model.
