What a sealer does
A sterilisation pouch sealer closes the packaging material after an instrument has been placed inside. Its purpose is to keep the package closed during the specified process and protect the contents after treatment, provided the packaging remains intact and is handled correctly.
“Sealed” does not automatically mean “sterile”: sealing is only one stage in the workflow. Check compatibility between the machine, pouch, device and method in their respective instructions.
Where it fits into the process
The process depends on several factors, including instrument design, cleaning and disassembly, packaging, loading and cycle monitoring. Packaging material is intended for clean instruments, not dirty ones. A later step does not correct an earlier error.
For reusable medical devices, developing and scientifically validating reprocessing instructions are part of the process. Sealing therefore fits into a defined workflow; it does not replace cleaning, preparation or sterilisation.
How to include it in the studio workflow
- Check that the pouch is intended for the method and device in question.
- Place only clean instruments inside, prepared according to their respective instructions.
- Position the instruments and leave the clearance specified by the packaging manufacturer.
- Use the machine and check the seal according to its manual.
- Identify and load the package according to the established process; record the checks required by the protocol.
These are organisational principles, not technical parameters: operational details depend on the instructions for the products used.
What limitations should you bear in mind?
There is no universal setting to recommend here. Temperature, time, pressure, seal width and checks may vary according to the machine, materials and applicable requirements. Do not copy a value from another model without confirmation from the manufacturer.
Before buying, check the machine’s compatibility with the chosen pouches, required maintenance and operating documentation. If the seal is irregular or the package is damaged, do not consider it suitable: follow the documented procedure for rejection and repackaging.
The sealer closes the package; process safety depends on all the stages and checks together.
Frequently asked questions
Does a sealer sterilise instruments?
No. It closes compatible packaging material; cleaning and sterilisation are separate stages.
Will every pouch work with any autoclave?
Do not assume so: check compatibility in the pouch and steriliser instructions.
Can I use the same setting for every pouch?
Only if the manufacturer confirms that combination of machine and material.
